Working with Data Management
Plans Here you will find information and help on working with data management plans.
The library provides you with the application RDMO to create data management plans. How to use RDMO and which important information a data management plan (DMP) should not miss, we explain on this page.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the Research Datamanagement Team.
RDMO Application for Creating Data Management
Plans With RDMO, you can capture all relevant planning information for your research project by answering questions in a data management plan (DMP). You can use it to document your data management for the entire data lifecycle. To do this, you first select a question catalog (see below) and answer the questions contained in it according to your research project. You can create multiple DMPs simultaneously and collaboratively manage them with other researchers.
To use the program, you must be connected to the university network and log in with your user ID from the ITMZ. The free service is provided by the University Library and stores your content on a server of the IT and Media Center Rostock.
Creating and Managing a Data Management Plan
After registering with the RDMO application, you can create a new project. A project corresponds to the answer to a question catalog, i.e., a data management plan. Depending on the structure of your research project or the requirements of your funding agency, it may be sensible to create multiple projects. For example, in very large research projects with very heterogeneous methods, it may be sensible to create a separate project in RDMO for each sub-project. In addition, there is the possibility of setting up a overarching project in RDMO. The application allows you to take over answers from the overarching DMP in this case.
To create the new project, you must select a title and a description, as well as a question catalog. Currently, the following questionnaires are available:
Question | Catalog Description |
---|---|
University of Rostock | Comprehensive questionnaire for detailed planning of research data management |
DFG Checklist | This question catalog covers the questions of the DFG's Checklist for Handling Research Data (2021) |
Horizon Europe |
Research Data (2021) Horizon Europe - This catalog is for research projects that are funded by the European Commission under the Horizon Europe program. It is based on the template for data management plans, version 1.0, dated May 5, 2021. Some EU questions are subdivided into sub-questions. In addition, many questions allow you to answer them specifically for the dataset. For the output of the data management plan

Question Catalog for Creating a Project Research Data Policy | This question catalog supports researchers in creating a research data policy for the working group or research project. This is particularly helpful in collaborative projects, where common goals for data management can be agreed upon. |
Software Management Plan for Researchers | This catalog is developed for the management of scientific software projects. It supports researchers in the development and project organization of software developments through up to 50 questions in different topic blocks. |
NFDI4Ing DMP Template | This catalog corresponds to the DFG Checklist, supplemented by engineering content. |
JKI-BLE Data Management Questionnaire |
JKI-BLE Data Management Questionnaire - This questionnaire developed by the JKI covers all relevant questions of data management and is fillable in both German and English. It is suitable for creating the following data management plans:

If you cannot find a suitable question catalog in RDMO, please feel free to contact us.
After creating the new project, you can answer the questions in RDMO and plan your data management step by step in your research project. The completed DMP can be exported in different formats (e.g., PDF, HTML, LaTeX) after answering the questions using the "Show answers" function.
If you have any questions or problems, please contact the Research Data Team.
Examples and further tools can be found below on this page.
Further information can be found, for example, in the Data-Management-WissGrid guide or on forschungsdaten.info.

Model plans for different research funding agencies
The Humboldt University of Berlin has compiled model plans for different research funding agencies on their website.
- Model DMP Horizon 2020 Version 3.0 for a 1st version of the data management plan in Horizon 2020
- Example plan based on template version 3.0 dated July 26, 2016
- Model DMP DFG for creating a data management plan in the context of a DFG application
- Model DMP BMBF for creating a data management plan in the context of a BMBF application
- Model DMP Volkswagenstiftung for creating a data management plan in the context of a BMBF application
- Model DMPs compiled by the DCC
Further tools
- DMPOnline is an online-based tool of the British Digital Curation Center for creating data management plans. DMPOnline offers template representations for various, mostly European research funding opportunities. Unfortunately, there are currently no templates for DFG or BMBF project applications.
- DMPTool is from the University of California and offers mainly US-American templates.
- Komfor is less a tool than a comprehensive guide to all possible aspects that should be mentioned in a DMP.
