Publisher Discounts

The University Library enters transformation or discount agreements for journals with publishers on behalf of the University of Rostock and Rostock University Medical School. These agreements enable you to publish open access free of charge or at a discount. They also improve options for the secondary publication of your work. In the following, we provide an overview of the publishers or journals with which Rostock University Library cooperates.

If you are planning to publish in one of the journals or with one of the publishers mentioned, you can benefit from the special conditions or discounts listed as a member or affiliate of the University of Rostock or Rostock University Medical School. As a rule, the prerequisite is that you are the responsible corresponding author and state your affiliation to the University of Rostock / Rostock University Medical School when submitting your article.

AAAS Science Advances

The American Association for the Advancement of Science is a large scientific society and publishes various journals (e.g. Science).

Discounts and secondary publication opportunities

  • You will receive a 15% discount on your open access publication in Science Advances with cc-by or cc-by-nc licence on the standard price of 4,500 USD net. This cost cannot be funded from the Open Access Publication Fund. Once your article has been accepted, you will receive a payment request by email, including a link into RightsLink's payment system. There, select "Apply Discount" and look for the entry for the University of Rostock under "Affiliation Discount". Confirm with "Apply Discount" and check the discounted invoice amount in the main window.

  • You will receive a discount of 7.5% on the publication costs. In addition, a price cap of 2,000 EUR gross applies, provided that the publication complies with the funding regulations of the Open Access Publication Fund. The University Library checks whether the publication belongs to the University of Rostock / Rostock University Medical School.
  • Invoicing is done directly to the University Library, which finances the costs from the Open Access Publication Fund; you will not receive an invoice. An application for funding from the Open Access Publication Fund is not required.

Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS)

PNAS is a scientific multidisciplinary journal of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, with a focus on biology, physics and social sciences. All articles published since 1915 are available with a 6-month embargo period via PNAS or PubMed Central.

Springer Nature

Springer Nature is a scientific publishing group that publishes journals in a wide range of disciplines. The University of Rostock has joined the national DEAL agreement with Springer Nature, which allows, among other things, publications in subscription-based journals to be published open access without additional costs. The corresponding author must be a researching or teaching member of the University of Rostock / Rostock University Medical Centre. Verification of the author’s affiliation is carried out by the University Library.

Nature branded journals as well as magazines and technical journals are not included in the contract.

Publications in subscription-based journals ("open choice") can be published open access at no additional cost.

  • The contract covers research articles (original papers, review papers, brief communications) and non-research articles (editorial notes, book reviews, letters, reports). It excludes non-research articles in specialist medical journals (see list).

Publications in genuine open access journals ("fully open access") are generally discounted by 20% (does not apply to Nature Communications and Scientific Reports). Invoices are sent to the University Library. The costs are currently financed by the Open Access Publication Fund and the University Library. Partial financing from the Open Access Publication Fund is possible for corresponding authors from Rostock University Medical School if the eligibility conditions are met and funding resources are available. Publications in subscription-based journals ("hybrid open access") can be published open access at no additional cost.

Publications in genuine open access journals ("fully open access") are generally discounted by 20%. Invoices are sent to the University Library. The costs are currently financed by the Open Access Publication Fund and the University Library. Partial financing from the Open Access Publication Fund is possible for corresponding authors from Rostock University Medical School if the eligibility conditions are met and funding resources are available.
