Courses & Events

Events
The University Library supports staff and students in getting started with new research data management tools (e.g. Git, electronic lab notebooks) by offering introductory sessions whenever these tools are made available to members of the University of Rostock (UR). In addition, the Library participates in the annual nationwide Love Data Week, which is jointly organised by several universities and research institutions in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The focus here is primarily on lectures on current developments and topics in research data management.

Regular courses
The University Library supports the development of research data management skills through a diverse range of courses. These range from one-hour quick-start sessions, which provide a concise overview of a topic, to two-day workshops organised in collaboration with the Graduate Academy, which offer a comprehensive introduction to all aspects of research data management. This range of options addresses both fundamental questions and provides in-depth knowledge. The courses also cater to a variety of target groups – from undergraduates and PhD students to experienced researchers.

Events on request
In addition to the regular programme, researchers and working groups have the option of requesting bespoke events and workshops. These formats can be tailored in terms of theme and content to meet specific needs – ranging from the basics of FDM to subject-specific questions relating to individual projects. There is also flexibility in the choice of format, such as short online sessions or practical in-person workshops. In this way, tailor-made programmes can be created that specifically address the requirements of the respective group.

“Data Skills” Course
To provide even better support to researchers and students at our university in the area of research data management (RDM), we have designed a comprehensive self-study course and published it on ILIAS: Data Skills – Your Introduction to Research Data Management. The course is structured in modules and guides participants step by step through the entire lifecycle of research data. The basic module lays the foundations for RDM, from creating a data management plan through to organisation and documentation, as well as legal frameworks and data protection. Participants learn how to plan, archive and publish data responsibly. The advanced module for the social sciences takes a subject-specific approach. At the end of the modules, participants can test their knowledge directly via integrated tests on ILIAS.
